4. These have almost square upper bows, sometimes elongated laterally, with multiple ribs, usually with wings and often with fully moulded lower bows. There are few matching designs and the division between sub-groups is quite arbitrarily based on the number of ribs running more or less the full height of the upper bow, the wings frequently having extra vertical mouldings.
4.a1. Plate 92. Three ribs, plain lower bow. Those after / have at the top of the lower bow the marked mouldings which form subdivision 2 in the following sub types of 4.
9127 9129* 9133 9137 9139 9142 9144 9146–7 9171 9234 9267 9304 9511 11728* 12511–2 / 9357* 11732
4.a2. Plates 92–93. Cross-moulded lower bow:

Dating of both, those of 4.a2 are underlined:
9137 & 9304 Hod Hill, before 50; 9316* Chichester, Claudian; 9142 Colchester, 44–60; 9112 Colchester,49–61; 9171 Waddon Hill, 50–60; 9234 Colchester 54–60; 11742 Gorhambury, before 60; 11742 Gorhambury, before 60; 9129* Longthorpe, before 65; 9139 Brough-on-Humber, c.125; 9340 Richborough, before 3rd century.
This series of dates is as neat a demonstration of an early group as could be wished for. All save the last are earlier than 65. If one were to apply normal rules concerning the onset of residuality, then the period 55–65 at least would have to be proposed for the time when these were passing out of use. The other feature is that these tend not to be simple brooches such as those forming 1.a, and the very different emphasis of the dating of those must indicate that the whole Hod Hill range cannot be given a blanket date, as I have been guilty of having done in the past.

4.b. Four ribs, divided into those with plain lower bows, 4.b1; those with more than one moulding under the upper bow, 4.b2; and those with completely cross-moulded lower bows, 4.b3. This is the common type in Hod Hills, falling as it does between some of the more specific stools chosen so far for the type.
